Be the bearer of bad news

Contents

Being the bearer of bad news is never fun. Those who have to tell someone ‘the bad news’, very often are confronted with their reasoning (‘It is the right decision') and feelings ('I do like that employee'). Is it a well-though-out decision? You better swallow that bitter pill and help the other to deal with the news.

Aims

  • Convey the message in a clear and subtle way
  • Be specific
  • Motivate and reason (but not too much!)
  • Deal with emotions (anger, disappointment, incomprehension)
  • Let the employee tell his story
  • Show sympathy
  • Make agreements and follow them up

Formula

  • Training of 12 to 18 hrs (to be determined in function of level and needs)
  • Individually or in small groups (max. 5 participants)
